Proof-of-Work mining is a process where powerful computers compete to solve complex mathematical puzzles to validate transactions on the blockchain. For instance, a mining farm in upstate New York was powered by a nearby dam that was previously unused. Other examples are plenty, from solar energy, and flaregas energy, to even vulcanic energy.

Some critics argue that the process still consumes a significant amount of energy and that much of this energy comes from non-renewable sources such as coal. Also, the process of creating new mining hardware can also contribute to e-waste and other environmental concerns,
